SYSTEMS INTEGRATION | Quality Assurance

Silverbear advocates the use of the 'Quality Gates' technique to ensure structured, consistent testing and reporting throughout the entire solution development lifecycle (SDLC) as an essential risk management strategy. As such, every stage of the SDLC has its testing counterpart, rather than testing being left until the end of the SDLC. This addresses a number of issues:

  • Matching specifications with tests to validate processes and functions will minimise 'scope creep'. The test plan shall be produced at the outset of the SDLC, alongside the system specification, as a signed-off deliverable. The test plan should be visible to all participants as this will be the agreed target towards which the entire team will be working.
  • Defined functions and processes with matching test cases will assist in producing a clear system specification as a function that cannot be tested highlights a poor specification.
  • Analysis of incidents raised and reconciliation with the test plan will clarify whether the incident is an error or a potential change request.
  • Remediation of incidents found during development are easier and cheaper to fix than those found at the end of the SDLC.
  • On-going test reports will give an accurate indication of programme progress, together with an indication of the quantity and criticality of outstanding issues. This will facilitate the production of accurate impact analyses and aid in cost, programme control and expectations management.
